The History of Peugeot
Peugeot is today one of Europe’s biggest car manufacturers. They have been around since 1810 but of course, they were not making cars back then. They started by making coffee mills and bicycles.
Armand Peugeot created the Le Grand Bi Penny-Farthing in 1882 along with a range of other bicycles.
Puegeot met with Gottlieb Daimler and saw how profitabel car manufacturing is. They first produced a steam-powered car in 1889 with only four made.
Peugeot were early adopters into motor racing. Albert Lemaitre won the Paris-Rouen race in a Peugeot.
During WWI production was stopped and they instead shifted to manufacturing arms, military vehicles, shells and much more to help with the war efforts.
After the war, they created the 1919 Targa Florio. They also debuted the type 153 in 1926.
The Peugeot 201 was the cheapest vehicle available in France when they released it. The depression then hit and car sales decreased dramatically but Peugeot survived this bad spell.
Car production returned in 1946 after WWII and they released the 202 and then the 203 in 1947.
Peugeot acquired a 30% share in Citreon in 1974 and fully took it over in 1975. The French government gave a large sum of money to the French company.
The 205 was launched in 1983 and was hugely successful.
In 2016 they unveiled the new 3008 model. It was awarded the CarBuyer Car of the year in 2017 and it also won the best SUV award.
Peugeot is currently the 7th highest selling car manufacturer in Ireland.
